Not suer this is the place for this thread as I am new to pc. I have a Dell optiplex GX520 this machine is dedicated to run a cnc router machine. It was pushed used about 6 month ago seam to work fine when I received it. Today when I tried to boot it up all i get is blinking lights. As the lite s are not labeled have no idea what most mean. light on the CD/DVD drive blinks amber along with the power button, the LAN indicator blinks amber,#1&2 diagnostic lights on not blinking, lights #4&5 blinking amber. HEELLPP where do I start. Thanks for the help . James

Thanks Vger for coming back so fast. when I push the power button the blinking starts.all the list are amber. the DVD drive start recycling. I have 5 amber blinking lights DVD drive door, power button,LAN indicator light, Diagnostic light #4&5 Diagnostic light #1&2 are on and are also amber. Parts are available but so is a replacement computer.

Vger I have a up date disconnected all power cables and ribbons cleaned all connections removed power supply cleaned fan. reinstalled hard drive reconnected all cables and ribbons. connected power. Now I have blinking green DVD dvd light green power button light, Blinking green, LAN indicator light # 1,2 and 3 #4 LAN light on green. There is a symbol of some kind top of LAN panel can not make out what it is. Am I right being the lights are now all green I can rule out a bad power supply? Thanks for your patients James

Also it may be a good idea to change out the cmos battery as (I read this is an issue in some Dell's when the cmos battery is died/failing)..
!. Before changing out the cmos battery -unplug the pc ,hold the power button down for at least 30 secs or longer, make sure all the mobo lights are out when doing this.
2.replace cmos battery...power up and test..

Vger back in town after trip from hell. replaced the cr2032 battery and installed new hard drive.still have the same problem. all lights are green with DVD tray light blinking ever 2 seconds power light not blinking, diagnostic 4 on and not blinking, diagnostic light 1 and 2 bringing ever 1 seconds diagnostic 3 blinking ever 2 seconds. Im surely over my head with this and don't know where to turn . Thanks for your help. James

no beep codes. The DVD tray sounds like it is trying to recycle the door does not open however. Ive tried unplugging the hard drive did not help. do you think unplugging each component one at a time less the mother board help find the bad component? James

Hope you don`t mind the interjection folks :)

James,

Does your DVD drive have a small pin hole on the front of it where you can insert a straightened out paperclip, if yes, give it a try and see if the drive tray can be manually opened, alternatively disconnect the DVD drive from the PSU and MB in case a bad optical drive is causing the POST to fail.

In both instances please make sure that the computer is isolated from the mains power first.

Vger and all that helped. Problem solved It was the mother board. Found a board on line for $4.oo along with a 89cent capacitor in the monitor and Im as good as new. All I have to do now is learn to use a PC and try to forget all my Mac habits. Again thanks to all for the help theres a good chance you will hear from me again. James
