Dell Optiplex 745 BIOS update error message

that can be true, especially if you have an older motherboard and want to upgrade to the newest processor.
but your mobo is an old gen, and the 'new' processor you want to install is also a similar vintage - so you may not need the BIOS update.

it all depends of course if the 'new' processor is supported by your current BIOS.
quick test is simply to plug in the upgrade and see if the PC boots, if it doesn't, it's unsupported and you'll need the latest BIOS version. or at least a BIOS version higher than the current one, that does support the processor.

Okay @Bruce I will try that. I have not yet bought the CPU yet. I thought I had to update the BIOS first. Does anyone know why this latest BIOS will not update for me? Thanks for the help and sorry to keep bothering you for help.

that Core 2 Duo Q6700 processor came out around the end of 2007.
where are you buying it from?
what is your current processor?

to answer your question as to why it won't update;
  • incompatible BIOS update with your system
  • file corrupted during download
  • file corrupted on website
  • faulty BIOS chip

The checksum says it is good so should work

From what I found (Post #27) I think it should take the cpu with the current BIOS.
The only problem is if you buy the cpu and it does not work you are out of pocket.

May I ask why you are upgrading an old XP machine - just curious

Okay @PeterOz thanks for helping. One more thing how should I install the file. Should I do a DOS key or just click on it to install it. I will probably not update the CPU. I got this computer off of ebay for a old XP gaming computer. Thanks for the help again.

Thanks again for the help. @PeterOz I have not tried the BIOS update yet. May I ask why do you think the BIOS file will work? The dell website is where I was downloading the BIOS file. I have attached a picture of the dell optiplex computer that I have. I do not know if that will matter about the BIOS file.

That last link was to your machine from service tag - that was the only difference.
As I said if you do not intend to update the cpu do not update the bios.
Updating a bios should be only done to fix a known issue.
Updating a bios and something goes wrong Computer=brick
