my parents have a Dell laptop which runs i3 processor M380 2,53 ghz 4g of Ram
Windows 10

Its basic problem is its slow - - Its impossible to try and do more than one thing at a time
As one example when you open up file explorer to load pictures from a folder you can watch visibly as it loads each picture

One thing I noticed - when running Task Manager - and it has the stats of cpu/memory/disk...under processes

Was that Disk was at a 100% and remained at a 100% for a period of at least an hour - before it dropped down to virtually nothing. Could this be indicative that all is not well ? Or is this normal behaviour ?

Thanks
NIgel

Hi nigel :)

Please download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator. When the program opens select the following boxes:

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP Configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Please post the log in your next reply :)

hiya -- thanks for the reply.,...I know my question was quite generic and open ended. I don't have the laptop at the moment - will have it from them over the christmas holidays. Suggest we put this thread on hold till then ? or close it if thats easier and I can re-open to run the various downloads

Nigel

Thanks for your log :)

Please download the FRST 32 bit or FRST 64bit version to suit your operating system. It is important FRST is downloaded to your desktop.

If you are unsure if your operating system is 32 or 64 Bit please go HERE.

Once downloaded right click the FRST desktop icon and select "Run as administrator" from the menu"

If you receive any security warnings, or the User Account Control warning opens at any time whilst using FRST you can safely allow FRST to proceed.
Frst will open with two dialogue boxes, accept the disclaimer.

Accept the default whitelist options,
If the additions.txt options box is not checked please select it.
Then select "Scan"

Frst will take a few minutes to scan your computer, and when finished will produce two log files on your desktop, FRST.txt, and Addition.txt. They will display immediately on the desktop, but can be reopened later as a notepad file.

Thanks for those Nigel. :) I'm going to have @DonnaB analyze these files to ensure there's no malware that might be slowing your computer.

While we wait, can you download Autoruns for me? I want to see what's running at Startup.

Run Autoruns.exe (32-bit system) and after it scans, go to File > Save and save it as a Text file :) Then upload it so I can analyze it. :)

Once DonnaB responds, I'll have her take over this thread until she gives the all-clear that it is malware free. :) Then we can continue your diagnostics :)

Here is the Autoruns output

I have only just installed Total 360 recently - replacing Avast. Can remove Total 360 if thats a recommendation - but would like to know what to put in place

Avast re-installed - I had only used Total 360 based on other feedback I'd had from this forum for a Vista issue - but if not generally recommended then no problem using Avast
Will wait for results of scans for anymore advice

FRST Fix.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop. NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST/FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work. NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system Run FRST/FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run. When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.
