Solved Dead PC

Not open for further replies.
Went on vacation a couple years ago, unplugged the pc.. but didn't unhook the internet cable.. got home, Modem was dead and PC would start, but no video, just black screen.. tried a different card, tried hooking the video to the board, still black, fans running, no beeps etc... unhooked it, set it aside... decided to fix it a couple weeks ago. hooked it up... now, I get no fans nothing.. Motherboard LCD's light... tried different power supply, same thing... Ordered a motherboard.. same it had in it. Asus Prime Z270-A Put the new board in, put a new vid card in... still the same thing. swapped memory and power supply from my gaming PC.. still just a black screen. tried turning power on at the board, nothing... swapped in new cables. Pulled the power supply, memory and vid card from my gaming PC and put in.. still nothing.. I'm lost. The only thing I havent tried is the processor.. (I7-7700K) but I think the fans etc would at least turn on if the processor was smoked? Please tell me if thats wrong... looking for ideas... Thanks!

Welcome to PCHF KnitePrince,

Did the original MB ever beep, most MBs don`t ship with an onboard speaker so unless you previously added one there is most likely not one present so you will not get any error beeps.

I would go back to working with the original MB, CPU, RAM and PSU, no add on video card for now, assemble just these components on a large piece of cardboard or other non conductive surface, attach the screen to the appropriate video port on the MB, power up to see what happens then post back with an update.

I think the fans etc would at least turn on if the processor was smoked?

If only the CPU was bad yes, bad PSU or MB or even incompatible RAM could prevent the board from powering up.

Tip, you should when possible use a wired PS/2 type keyboard when troubleshooting, just in case the USB ports on the MB have been damaged or become disabled in the BIOS.

No beeps that I recall. I have the tiny speaker plugged in that came with the MB on both of them. I don't have the time to tinker atm.. but was thinking about pulling my game rig apart to put the processor in the other board and see what happened. i know the individual parts are good, from using them in that gamer rig, memory, vid card, power supply, cables etc... Then we have the issue of the mother board.. one old with problems and one new..... possibly with problems too? Possible? The only thing left that hasnt been touched is the I7-7700K processor..... I will put it together on the plastic table when I get time and see what happens. got this link bookmarked, Thank you fro teh reply and suggestions!!! I need all the help i can get with this one.

If there is an onboard BIOS speaker present you should of previously heard a single beep once the hardware had passed the power on self test (POST).

Is the speaker that you have the same as the one in my attachment below.

I do have a basic test that you can do for the processor but I would suggest that as I did previously that you do the initial testing with the original hardware, for what I have in mind that would just involve the CPU, MB, PSU and a single stick of RAM for now.

Not sure what I was meant to be seeing at your link would I be correct in thinking that it was to show that the case shipped with a Buzzer/Motherboard Alarm as is what it is called in the chassis manual, if yes and you so not recall ever hearing a single beep after POST has completed, see attachment below to make sure that the speaker is on the correct four pins then get back to us.

I am flipping a house, I havent had much tiome to tinker with it.. however.. I did do as you suggested and reinstall the old mother board... so now the fans kick on... black screen still. I tried a couple different cards and the factory hdmi port.. all black... when I get time I am going to re install the "new" motherboard again, and go from there. No beeps, nothing. It just starts, fans run etc... But I get no boot screen and no beeps.

Not sure what I was meant to be seeing at your link ...
Just posting a pic of the chassis. You suggested putting it together on the table.. that chassis is pretty much the same thing is all I was trying to say. Nothing more. I did check that the speaker ws on the right pins.. it has the connector block everything plugs into, and then the little block goes onto the board so even an idiot like myself cant mess it up.

No worries about the delay, standard forum practice asking for an update when a thread goes quiet for a few days and then again two days later, should we still get no reply the thread gets closed so we don`t have unanswered threads all over the place.

If we don`t hear back from you before one of us will ask you for an update sometime next week when you will hopefully have a bit more time to spare.

I put the processor in the new motherboard again. Hooked it all up... nothing, no fans, nothing... I took the power cable off and replaced it with the old one, really tight... and it immediately started and booted... Confused, I tested the new cable, tested fine with an ohm meter, I plugged it back in... nothing... It fit tight, so I wiggled it in a bit holding the back of the board, and... It went in a wee bit further... it also works.... I KNOW I swapped out the cables twice. Probably just being too "nice" and not forcing it home is all i can figure... Did I mention the connector on the new mobo is really a tight fit? (Only excuse I have) I installed windows from the original installation usb... put in the code, and it is up and running like a dream.... I want to say THANK YOU for the help and encouragement, or I wouldnt have tinkered with it much more. Too much money in it to keep ordering stuff I wasnt sure needed fixed. perseverance paid off... It will be headed up to the house I am remodeling as soon as we get internet there. Thanks again!!!!!!! VERY much!

Ditto to what gus says above and well done for persevering with it (y)

Just a final word from me and hopefully a tip that others may take on board, what has happened here is a prime example as to why any new build should always be assembled outside of the case first, you were quite rightfully careful not to put too much pressure on the connections when pushing them home as being on stand offs (or even raised mounting points) if you push too hard the MB can flex and the board and/or soldered circuits can get broken, this can`t happen if the MB is on a flat, firm, non conductive surface.
