Connecting Monitor to PC

Status
Not open for further replies.
Another thing I just noticed- when both monitor and PC are all plugged in and connected and the little light is orange, when I press one of the other buttons on the monitor, it says it's in power save mode and to press a key or move the mouse. However, when I do either of those things nothing happens.

The PC only has a DVI or HDMI point port (no VGA) so I need the adapter to connect it at all.

This is an old pc, can you take a detailed photo of all the back panel connections please, with that adapter off. Seems an old Pc to have HDMI? It is a socket 775.

Somewhere on that motherboard will be a brand and model?

Can we be sure what you mean by VGA, is it a D-sub? Like this.

Also your PC has 2 tv tuner cards fitted. If you do not plan on using these ancient cards please remove them.

Sorry to ask 50 questions but we want to be sure of it.

Lets start afresh. Connect your monitor to your pc with the video cable, yes you will need the adapter to go on the pc end to the DVI port. Do not connect anything to the HDMI port on the PC. See what the result is?

Would recommend removal of the two tuner cards.

Ok yes did the setup as you said. Monitor is stuck in power save mode. When I press the power button, the little light goes green for half a second then goes back to orange. At the same time the message "in power save mode, press any key on keyboard or move mouse" appears on the screen. Doing either of those options does not produce any result however.

How do you remove the tuner cards?

We will show you how to remove the old tuner cards, but first can you try the adapter, video cable, and monitor on another pc?

One screw to remove as per picture to remove expansion card

Ok tested video cable and monitor on another PC and works fine. I don't have any other PC though with a DVI port so I can't test the adapter. The adapter is only about 1 month old so should be in good condition.

Hello Benobi, sounds very much like your graphics processor may be dead. Do you know enough about the pc to enter the bios and ensure the graphics processor has not been disabled?

Do you have any friends that could loan you a graphics card to test the system with?

Ok thanks. I would try to enter the BIOS but I can't even access it because they monitor screen is just black- can't do anything at all on it. How simple is it to replace a graphics processor?

Hi Benobi, I didnt explain very well but we would have to get some video display first before attempting to check BIOS. It is possible that a stand alone graphics card may get around your issue.

To replace the onboard graphics means a new motherboard, and considering the age of your PC would be futile.

I would love to do more for you but I think given your level of expertise and the requirement to have parts on hand, it may be better for you to take it to a PC reapair shop and have them have a look at it. They will certainly have a graphics card on hand to test with.

You may have here a faulty power supply, or bad motherboard. Even if you could fix this with a dedicated graphics card it may also lead to fitting a more powerful Power supply.

That is unless some else has another approach?
