Hi, so I have a PC tower which I know works fine. The monitor turns on fine and shows the little green light in the corner when I turn it on. However, when I connect the tower to the monitor with a vga cable, the monitor's little light immediately goes from green to orange. All this time the monitor is just black. Any suggestions on how to stop this? I have tried with multiple monitor, VGA cables and whatever the name of the cable is that gives the PC/monitor power and still doesn't work.

Hi there @Benobi and welcome to PCHF :)

We need more information about your computer. What brand of monitor is it, what brand of computer is it, RAM specs, HD brand, etc. :)

Basically we need:

OS:
Brand/Manufacturer of computer:
RAM brand and capacity:
HD brand and capacity:
Monitor brand and specs:
GPU:
PSU:

Ok, I've just been given the PC from a friend so not really sure all the details but I'll try my best.
OS: ubuntu
PC brand: Dolby
Monitor: dell

Other info: intel I2 quad PC

On the front of the PC it says AOpen (not sure what that means)

As I can't actually use the PC as I can't get a monitor to work, I can't work out any other specs. So, all I have provided is just from what I can read externally on the hardware it self.

I'm trying to post a picture but it says the file is too big.... I have had the PC for a few weeks and the same problem was happening then suddenly it all started working. I hadn't use some it for about a week and now it's all happening again. Everything is this exact same as it was a week ago- yet I've literally tried everything I can think of and it still won't work...

Oh sorry- I really know nothing about computers... I honestly don't know the brand of computer as I can't turn it on and there is nothing else to read on the exterior.

Hi Benobi, and welcome to PCHF. There are 2 easy ways to get this file to us, get this free portable (meaning no install and mess) Faststone resizer HERE and use it to make the file size smaller, or upload the file to a hosting service and link to your post. Try Imgur HERE to do that. You will need to create a free account but they are non invasive.

Ok, here is the link to the photos of the hardware : https://benobiz.imgur.com/all/
I've got no idea how to open the PC though to see inside. I feel like its a really simple issue though since it was all working a week ago and nothing has changed. Yet I have tried everything I can think of and still not working.

Hi Benobi, your pc is branded Aopen, to access the internals there should be two screws, the top one is visible but the lower one may be hidden by the blue network cable. Remove these screws and pull the side cover rearwards a small amount and it should come straight off.

Ok thanks I'll give that a try. One other thing I have just noticed is when I have simply connected the monitor to the power and stick the VGA cord into, then connecting the other end of the VGA cable into either my hdmi or dvi adapter, the monitor turns off- all without ever being connected to the PC.

That could be normal procedure as the monitor could be turning itself into power save mode. Have you tried connecting the monitor without the adapter you have in your picture?

The PC only has a DVI or HDMI point port (no VGA) so I need the adapter to connect it at all. When not connecting to the PC and just running one end of the VGA cable into the monitor with nothing on the other end, it doesn't turn off as it otherwise would.

Can you have a look around the motherboard (the big circuit board with the fan marked Intel) and see if you can find some more ID information on it, or perhaps take some more detailed pics of it?

So I take it the monitor only has a D-sub connector?

Have you a spare monitor you can test the pc with?
