Solved Connecting computer with TV

Hi,
I am a senior citizen and my grasp of all of the tech language is limited at best. My desktop computer is set up with a Samsung monitor/TV (VGA) and speakers and it works fine. I would like to also have my computer with my Samsung TV so I could watch some things while I'm sitting in a more comfortable chair. If I use another VGA cable to the TV, is there a way to change between the monitor and TV without having to get behind the computer to switch between the two? (It is quite difficult for me to maneuver behind and lift the computer.) That wouldn't affect the speaker set up? I have read an HDMI cable can link the computer and TV and wouldn't need the audio cable. Can both the VGA and HDMI be set up on the computer at the same time? How would the computer know which I want to use: TV or monitor?

Hello Bernadine,

It is possible to do what you are asking but we will need some information about your computer for us to best be able to help you.

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build tell us as much as you can about the hardware.

Thank you for your reply. It is a Dell Inspiron 660. I bought it new in August of 2013 when my old computer died. I had the repair person order it. I don't know exactly if he did anything other than transferring my files from the old to the new computer. Trying to take a picture of the back of my computer is practically impossible, it's tangle of wires that I've tried to straighten out (but it defeats me every time.) I tried to attach a picture of the back of my TV but I got a message that the .jpg file was too large. I'll try to describe it instead. From left to right: 2 HDMI (DVD IN) [I have 2 DVDR], EX-LINK [round], below that DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL), USB, HDMI/PC/DVI-D AUDIO IN, below those 2 (I think I have this right VGA it has 3 rows of 5 staggered) PC IN, next to that is Headphones jack, ANT IN, below that COMPONENT IN / AV IN (3 plugs) PR, PB, Y/VIDEO (red blue yellow) Access to the back of the TV is fairly easy but the back of the computer is difficult. I'd not be able to switch back and forth if I have to access the back of the computer. I hope this gives you enough information. Thank you.
I have some other things I need to do, so if I'm not able to reply right away, it's not that I'm not interested or grateful, I just have to do them instead. Thank you, Bernadine

Your computer specs show that it has one 15-hole VGA port and one 19-pin HDMI port, if I am correctly understanding your OP and reply #3 you are presently using the VGA port on the computer with your Samsung screen, this leaves the HDMI port available on the computer to which you can connect your Televisions HDMI port to, an example cable here

To change from computer screen to your television, look on the TVs remote control for what is called on mine the Source button, press that and it should give you the option to switch to the PC, be sure to make a written note of what the original setting is so that you can quickly change it back again when you need to.
