I'm not entirely sure which topic to post this under but crashes seems to be a half decent shot.

So I built this PC around 4 months ago now and it was working perfectly fine with no issues up until around 1-2 weeks ago when suddenly it just decides to restart while I'm using it.
At the time I was running Chrome, Discord, and a game. It booted up and I logged back in and nothing seems out of the ordinary, I opened back up my programs and continued as a I was for around 20 minutes when it decided to restart again. This time upon logging back in I ran an antivirus (or two) which came up without any issues. Since then a day hasn't really passes without some number of restarts, ranging between 1 up to over 10 in the space of an hour.

Around a week ago the problem developed further. I booted it up and after 5 seconds it restarted, and continued to loop that for around 2 minutes. I googled the problem and it appeared to lie with the RAM. Following a site, I opened up the case and cleaned my 8GB RAM, reinserted it, and it ran smoothly for around 20 minutes when it decided to restart. Back to square 1.

I've had no serious problems like the one above since then, however the frequency of the restarts is increasing and is starting to hinder my use of the machine. Even while typing this post I've had around 5 restarts from when I started making my account until this sentence as I type it.

I should probably mention that I have a very low budget build, sitting around £650 in total.
I'll list the ones I expect to come up:
GTX 1050
Intel i5-8400
8GB RAM

I've googled the problem many times and reasons I've seen in other posts and articles include viruses and overheating parts. I've checked viruses with Avast and Malwarebytes with no problems, and for temperature I was at one point looking at my monitor (CPUID HWMonitor) when it restarted which displayed normal temperatures (around the 20s-30s)
Another solution offered was to turn off Automatically Restart which was said to take me to a error message when the PC crashes. However I enabled this and the PC continues to restart without error messages. I've run the sfc /scannow command in command prompt, scanned for hardware issues which Win10 said it'd fixed around a week ago, and updated drivers. All went smoothly and the restarts still happen.

If anyone has any idea why this could be happening, please could they help. It's worth noting this is my first build, and I doubt I did it flawlessly, which is most likely going to be the issue, however it's taken 4 months to start having problems which is what's confusing me.

Thank you,
everways

Please go HERE and download the portable version of Speccy. Save it to somewhere you can find, locate the file and as it comes as a Zip file use your favorite unzip application to decompress it. Open the newly created folder and double left click Speccy.exe if you have a 32 bit system or Speccy64.exe if yours is 64bit. If you are not sure what your system is click HERE.

Speccy will open and after a short wait will display a summary of your system specs.
  • Click on the file menu.
  • Then click Publish snapshot.

BTW: once you have finished with speccy and no longer want it removing it is easy because it is a portable app with no install. Simply delete the downloaded file and folder you created when you decompressed it. Gone:thumbsup:

Thanks for both getting back to me on this. After it began restarting very frequently yesterday, I eventually got frustrated and reset the PC, which appears to have fixed it. I'll keep this thread open, should it start happening again.

Hello everways,

I don't (yet) actually own windows, so it's not technically activated
And I downloaded the OS from the windows website and created a boot usb

You need to purchase a licence key for Windows 10 asap, three important reasons for this. 1: We cannot help anybody that does not have a legitimate product key for any of their software, at the moment we have no way of knowing if you are using a legitimate or a cracked version of Windows. 2: The License Activation (slui.exe) failed error that you are getting is known to cause instability, this instability could be the result of something conflicting, read the one page thread here someone with a very similar if not the same problem. 3: You need to keep Windows fully up to date or you are putting yourself at risk of malware attack, your Speccy report shows that Windows is already out of date which really isn't a good idea.

Regarding the other errors we can see;

Can I ask why you have Java on the computer, it has long been one of the most commonly exploited programs and should only be used if for a specific reason, if it must be used then you should always ensure that you have the latest version and finally, get rid of it if you don't actually need it.

You are running Avast free when you do not actually need it and I would strongly suggest that you get rid of it using the info at the link that I have provided, full explanation below

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Having more than one AV installed on your computer is bad, it will slow down the computer, cause internet connection problems and leave you with no AV protection at all if they cancel each other out as they fight for resources.

If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

Thanks for all the help. I do intend to purchase windows soon, to be honest I forgot... As for the outdated version, I'm confused as to why that is, I get windows updates every 2-5 weeks and don't see why it's not on latest version.
Java is needed to run Minecraft, which I still play despite the community average being half my age :p

As for Avast and Malwarebytes, I'm a bit reluctant to uninstall them since I've caught malicious web content and downloads with them and had no warnings from Defender. I'm assuming the explanation would be that they're overriding Defender? If you can confirm that Defender will block everything they do, I'll happily uninstall.

Once again, thank you, I'll try get on fixing the issues you've mentioned.

This OS is shown to have been installed on 27/11/2018 and to have only been updated once on the same date when two updates were installed, possibly because Windows AutoUpdate is not enabled.

Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Which proves the point of which was being made;

It was only recommended that you uninstall Avast and by using the Avast clean removal info here do this then get Windows fully up to date, test then run Speccy again and post the updated Speccy url.

I'll look into the autoupdate.
Also, I apologise, I wasn't clear as to what I meant. When I said 'caught' I meant 'stopped' or 'blocked', that was terrible word choice, sorry.

Understood, we must wait on the updated Speccy url for now.
Thanks for all your help,
Unfortunately I probably won't be able to get windows for a few weeks (I'm away from Tuesday, very sorry), however I can probably fix the autoupdate within the next few days, should I send a Speccy report after doing this?

Out of interest have you any idea what the actual trigger for this is, the time between restarts and cause of restarts are completely random or at least it seems that way. I'd originally assumed it was some form of system scan that tried to process some damaged OS files, thus causing a system failure, and/or bad RAM installation which meant the RAM kept coming loose since I had a problem with the RAM beforehand (Would boot for 1-2 seconds before starting again continuously. Cleaned RAM module and it fixed it.)

As well as this, I'd like to ask advice in terms of purchasing Windows 10. After building the rig I haven't exactly had a ton of cash lying around, which contributes as to why I don't own Windows yet. Not being particularly motivated to dish out £100 for the OS from Microsoft, I looked for alternatives and found this: https://www.digitallicense.nl/windows-10-home-uk-oem-32-64-bits/?___store=us&___from_store=default
Would you trust this?
Sorry for being such a cheapskate...

As previously advised in my replies #13 and 15, we need to see an updated Speccy url showing that Windows is fully up to date and preferably with the AutoUpdate enabled.

As to what has triggered the restarts, it would be pure speculation at the moment but two possible causes have been identified, Windows not being fully up to date and activated and Avast causing conflicts.

Up to now to we are still waiting on an updated Speccy url, do not know whether or not Avast has been correctly uninstalled or if you have any more restarts, we need accurate up to date information to best be able to help.

Not sure about the site at your link but don`t blame anyone trying to save cash but only as long as the purchase is legit, read the reviews at your link then make your decision.

I have a new url: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/K3wFYCnkgUfJqsxLeuLfXK3
Interestingly it said my Windows was up to date, I'm a bit confused now...

You may be allowed to use Windows 10 and receive updates for a period of 90 days before you must enter a legitimate product key after which you will then be locked out from Windows.

Your updated Speccy url shows that you have not uninstalled Avast as was recommended and we have not been advised of any further restarts, from this point I will ask a more senior member of staff who carries more weight to take a look at your thread.

Good luck.
