Solved Changing router ended up setting off a digital bomb

I'm fat fingering this on my phone since thats the other method I have to post at the moment, so please pardon any grammar mistakes.

Ok, so I got my new router today (Dlink DIR-860L) that replaced my Trendnet (that tandomly woyld stop sercice yo all connections and needed a hard reset to work again)and went ahead and plugged it up. I followed the setup instructions precisely and finished the setup wizard.

After completing it, I noticed I still had no internet connection on my pc. Made sure router settings were kosher and did a modem and router restart for the heck of it. still nothing. the pc couldn't recognize the network "unidentified network". when I go to diagnose under the network adapter....it always ends by saying "ethernet doesnt have a valid IP configuration".

A quick list of steps I've done...

Uninstalled reinstalled network driver
Released renewed IP (would never renew )
TCP/IPv4 checkmarked and set to auto IP and DNS
Factory reset of modem.

Now under the traffic, it shows many packets sent but absolutely 0 received. it shows "no network access" for both ipv4 and ipv6 under ethernet status.

Here's the big issue I'm having with this. at first after all the tests and troubleshooting , it was thought to be a bad router. well...... I put the old router back in service and the same exact problem is happening now while using that one. I have a Xbox one and a blu ray player connected to the router and I have no service for either of them EXCEPT if I'm using the WiFi option. then the xbone will connect BUT still won't allow voice communications. BD player doesn't have WiFi. I did a direct connect from the xbone and modem and exactly the same. I can connect but no voice communication . did a direct connection from the modem to my pc, nothing....same. now I was thinking the modem, but how is it having WiFi service (through the router)??

My brain is fried from working on it and searching this since noon today . I know I left stuff out. Hopefully you guys know what's going on.

Thanks !!!!

Hi there.

Ok I see you @Samuria but while you wait you may want to try:

Reset TCP/IP and check if it helps.

a. Press Windows key + X, Select Command Prompt (Admin) and then press ENTER.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command and then press ENTER:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Note: If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

c. Reboot the computer.

If that doesnt work try:

a. Press Windows key + X, Select Command Prompt (Admin) and then press ENTER.
b. At the command prompt, type the following command and then press ENTER:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

c. Close the command prompt.

Then get back to us and I am sure we can help you further.

JB.

PS: Do not worry about the grammar,I do not have fat fingersbut I still fail ...:)

First off, I have idea what the @samurai is or how it got on my post. so I'm clueless as to what your referring to.

Now, I did the command line and this is what I see....

Resetting interface, ok
Resetting unicast address, ok
" neighbor, ok
" path, ok
Resetting , failed
Access is denied.

2nd....when I do the ip release and renew (mentioned that in op) it freezes on renew. It releases fine (or I'm guessing it does since it instantly returns with a few lines of code and goes back to being able to type something else. However all it does with renew is "windows ip configuration " and then nothing else. after about a minute it says " an error occurred while renewing interface ethernet: unable to contact your dhcp server. Request has timed out."

Since you did the factory reset did you access the modem and reconfigure it using the proper user name and password for your ISP?
Seeing you've changed things a bit, try connecting your pc direct to your modem and see if that works. Eliminate one possible issue at a time.

I did a direct connection from the modem to my pc and the pc works fine. Perfect connection.

When I log into the modem, there are no settings beyond setting a starting frequency (besides changing the password). It's a Netgear CM400

OK, so you now know there's no problem with the pc or modem. Suggest you reset the router to defaults and retry. Also some of these new routers boot so fast that you have to wait for the modem to boot before turning on the router.

Seanzy do you have any new information for us?

Yes, actually. It turned out to be a bad router. Possibly two bad routers. I replaced the new router with another one exactly like it, thinking the first one was bad. Well, the exact same problems were happening with the second router. I sent that one back and got a third router, and everything instantly began to work. WiFi, hardline, speaking with the router through my pc, everything mentioned above.

I could see one lemon, but to get two lemons, back to back that were the same router was very odd to me. Anyways, the problem is solved so mark it as so! :D:D

Thanks again everyone!!! (y)(y)(y)
