Solved Can't type anything in search box

Status
Not open for further replies.
I can't type anything in the search box (Cortana), start menu works normally otherwise.
In services.msc windows search is set to start automatically although when I look in running process's there is no search or cortana running.
The system is running Win10Pro which was updated from Win7 under the free upgrade offer. I don't want to do reset because all my installed apps/programs are working fine.

Can anyone offer assistance please?

It's not been working for months, in the past few days I've tried sfc and dism "fixes" I found on google but neither work.
Some fixes suggest using task manager and ending Cortana and/or search and restarting but they never appear in task manager

Eliminate Bad Settings with this nice tool.
  • Download SupRestric.exe save to your desktop.
  • Close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable the antivirus
  • Double click the file to launch it.
  • Windows: 7/8/10 Vista and run as administrator
  • Click Yes at any prompt.
  • The analysis takes only a few moments.
  • The report is on the desktop ( CTR.txt )
  • Copy paste report in next reply.
  • A reboot is needed to complete the repairs.
Temp File Cleaner.

  • Note: This program may very well reboot your machine. Save any work prior to running.
  • Clean up your temp files with TFC.exe
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Right click run as admin.
  • Please post all requested logs and tell me how things are running.

Thanks you, ran as instructions. Still unable to type in search box.

I don't want to risk an in-place repair because my programs, settings etc are exactly how I want them.
I had hoped getting Cortana/search to work would be easier than it seems to be.
Basically I'd rather live without search than screw my system up

From Microsoft.
If any of these functions like Start Menu, Settings, Search, Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Action Center and other Windows components are not responding, follow these below methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

  • Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select Command prompt (admin).

  • Enter the below commands one by one and hit Enter key.

    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
  • It will open the PowerShell window.

  • Now enter the below command and hit Enter key.

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
If the issue still persist, follow the below method.

Method 2:

  • Open the Task manager. Here’s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
  • Click File > Run New Task
  • Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
  • Type Powershell
  • Type the following in the Powershell prompt:
    $manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest
  • Close the Powershell window
  • Reboot the computer and check if it helps.
