Recently, I cannot save an Open Office (odt) file to desktop and the same with Wordpad (rtf).

When I "try again" and get to the "save as" stage, it shows in the window that it has saved to desktop, but it cannot be seen there ?

Try to run Open Office as admin (right click on shortcut, run as Administrator). How many user profiles on your PC?
I did what you said and tried again to save an odt doc to desktop, but it did not appear. As I have said to others, if i did a "save as", that window does show the docs i have saved, but they are not PHYSCALLY on the desktop. I am the only one who uses pc if that answers your question.

Do you can access other files from desktop? If so, try to create manually file .odt on desktop and then save your doc here and reopen to see is it successfully saved.

Also I have suggestion, that your drive may be full. But strange that you have no errors at all.

if you can see your file in the list in the Save As.. dialog box but not actually on the Desktop, maybe you have Don't show hidden files or folders, or Hide extensions for known file types ticked (unticked, whatever) in Folder Options in File Explorer.

on right click on the Desktop, click View and check Show Desktop icons is ticked.

are you seeing any icons on the Desktop?
how many are there, if too many, are you simply missing it?
hit the first letter of the filename on the keyboard and hold it in, that will make the cursor fly over all those icons.
