Solved Can't install updates

Status
Not open for further replies.
Hi,
My Windows 7 home premium laptop wont update, here's the history:
I couldn't install McAfee security which was giving an error saying possibly a dll file was missing or corrupt. I went to their online chat and they asked me to ensure all updates had been installed. I noticed there were 27 new updates so I went ahead and installed them and then tried McAfee again and it installed and is now running. I then noticed I had 6 new updates so I installed and got the message to restart computer which I did.
When computer re-started it said the updates failed so I tried one at a time but each failed. After using google I reset the WU and tried again (several times) and then received an error code which I followed Microsofts advise to fix it but it failed.
This morning I saw i now have 13 updates so I installed but when it re-started it said 7 failed with the following error codes:
Code 80070490
Code 80070308
Can anyone help me please?

Eliminate Bad Settings with this nice tool.
  • Download SupRestric.exe save to your desktop.
  • Close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable the antivirus
  • Double click the file to launch it.
  • Windows: 7/8/10 Vista and run as administrator
  • Click Yes at any prompt.
  • The analysis takes only a few moments.
  • The report is on the desktop ( CTR.txt )
  • Copy paste report in next reply.
  • A reboot is needed to complete the repairs.

As well you could try and run pre_scan under a clean boot or in safe mode.

In normal mode.
You can make a clean boot easily with this tool.
Save Process Close to your desktop.
Make sure that you have Pre_Scan. on the desktop as well.
Right click Process close run as admin.
Select [...] Browse.
Go to the windows folder, double click it.
Then select desktop.
Right click Pre_Scan and run as admin.
See if the program will run this way.
Also, you can run the All in one tool the same way.
Just use the portable version, from here.

Try running Pre_Scan with these instructions.
If it fails then run in safe mode.
If that fails then run the all in one tool in normal mode using these instructions and also run it in safe mode.

There is also a tool for fixing windows updates.

Download WindowsUpdatesFixer.
Install the program.
Right click the icon created on your desktop.
Run as admin.
Tick Re register Update Dlls
Then press Fix Windows Update.
You can also Switch To Advanced Mode.

Resetting Internet Explorer can sometimes help with update issues.

@gus wrote a nice guide showing how to reset Internet Explorer to default settings.

Or use the Browser Reset tool.

  • Download ResetBrowser To your desktop.
  • Now close all open browsers.
  • Right click and run as administrator.
  • Click on Reset Internet Explorer. -- Allow completion.

Might also be a good idea to reset all windows services to default.

Download Service repair tool to your desktop.
Right click run as admin.
Allow completion -- reboot if needed.
Note: If you connect via wireless you will need to change the — WLAN AutoConfig -- to run automatic this tool will disable it.
Hit the start button type services scroll to — WLAN AutoConfig -- the then right click it select properties.
Change the startup type to automatic. -- Also make sure and start the service.

Another step to take when dealing with Updates -- Windows defender updates.

Go here and grab the latest windows defender updates.
Even if you do not use it, having this updated will often times help with updates not working for some odd reason.

Also from the link above you will find MS Fix-its for update troubleshooting.
I'd suggest running the fixes provided.

Another tool that can help with such issues.

Run A Scan With OaksLabs Removal Tool To Reset Update settings.

Warning!! Program Closes All Other Processes While Running!!

  • Save Any Work Prior To Running This Tool!!
  • This Program Will Shut Down All Other Programs!!
  • Save Oaks Labs Tool To Your Desktop.
  • Right Click Run As Administrator.
  • Push Any Button To Continue.
  • Allow completion & Reboot If Needed.
