I bought this for 15€ and it turns out you can't install W7 or newer Windows without updating BIOS. I have no idea how complex that is, and I was scared not to mess it up, so I've decided to install Ubuntu 16. Everything is running smoothly except sound. I can't use any speakers or headsets, there are front and back connectors, I've tried both, still nothing.

Can anyone suggest a workaround? I believe there might be a conflict since it seems as if there is some kind of internal speaker, maybe if I cut that cable I would be able to use normal external speakers? What do you think?

Hello Stteffann,

Not sure who told you this but it but I've never heard of it before, HP provide drivers for Windows 7 so Windows 10 should run on it, and without updating the BIOS.

The only internal speaker the computer has is the one that is used for emitting BIOS beeps and no other sound can be heard through it, the problem that you are having may well be down to the fact that there are no specific Ubuntu audio drivers for the motherboard, this somewhat supported by the search results here
