I'm freezing and crashing and getting a stopcode error: reference by pointer. I don't have a ton of knowledge. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Windows 10 Home
Dell Inspiron 3670
Intel i3-8100 3.6 GHZ
24GB mem
1 TB HDD

There also seems to be a Windows update problem as my computer keeps saying it's updating, stops at 35%, then boots up.
Check for updates says that a feature update to Windows 10 version 21H2 Status: installing. This is not installing, it is stuck at 20%. The troubleshooter did not help.

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box

Hi--thanks for responding. I'm not able to take my computer apart right now, so all I know is Dell Inspiron 3670 comes with a 365 Watt PSU. If it's important, I'll try to get to it tomorrow. Attached are the files you requested.

No need to take the PC apart, while not the best the PSU is ok for the GPU that you have.

There are no drivers flagged up as the cause of the issue/s which tends to point towards a hardware or a settings issue.

Couple of questions;

The crashes are shown to be recent

When did the crashes first start to occur.

How do you come to have two different brands and spec of RAM in the computer and when was the second stick added.

I added the ram the first week that I got the computer and it ran fine. The crashes actually started about six months ago, I had hardly been using the computer, forgot about the error. I just started using it again

That is strange as your oldest crash dump is only two days old. You upgrading to Windows 11 and still having the same problem reinforces it being a hardware issue.

Check for any Windows 11 drivers, if there are none, install the latest Windows 10 Chipset drivers.

Run the onboard Dell diagnostics on all hardware.

Post back with an update when you are ready.

There is a whole list of current Windows 11 drivers.

The onboard Dell diagnostics program keeps saying it ran into a problem, try again later.

I tried the online Dell diagnostic and I crash.

Any ideas as to why the crash dumps were only a couple of days old.

Any new crash dumps for the latest episode/s.

Install just the latest chipset drivers.

Busy with my own work all day but will check back PM UK time when I finish.

I had used CCleaner and the Dell cleaner utilities...maybe that deletes the dump files? I'm not sure how to give you files now that I'm on Windows 11. I found WinDbg, ran it and copied the files into Word.

I don't really understand how to install just the latest chipset drivers.

More like the Windows registry got hosed, never ever go near anything that has the word cleaner associated with it, CCleaner is renowned for causing such problems but this is a first for me hearing that Dell also provide such rubbish.

Being that you have now have Windows 11 not 10 you have opened up a whole new can of worms, Dell computers are very picky about their drivers and so much so that they have to be installed in a certain order or you end up getting all sorts of problems.

I suggest that you clean install Windows 11 using an ISO obtained from here

Before clean installing Windows 11, download and save to a USB flashdrive the latest Dell drivers from here

Once Windows 11 has been clean installed you must install the Dell drivers in the order explained here Do not let Windows check for updates before you install the Dell drivers, this is most important.

Do I have to delete Windows 11 somehow first?
Also, when I finally got the Dell diagnostic to run, it said to 'update drivers (recommended),' so I did. Do I have to somehow go in and delete all of those?

No, it will get overwritten as Windows formats a drive as part of the installation procedure, this also means that the drivers will be gone as well.

Only download and save the drivers that you need and be sure to make a note of the installation order by copying them from the link that was previously provided.

I can't seem to install Windows 11, it says that I'm already running the latest addition. As far as the drivers, the system crashes if I try to automatically find drivers and if I scroll down and find specific drivers, I get errors when trying to download those and most of them don't match the installation order list anyway.

Your update suggests that you did not follow the steps advised in my reply #13 and for two reasons, Windows formats a drive when it installs meaning that there would be no OS present that could be updated and driver wise you save all of the drivers to a USB flashdrive and then install them one by one in the order that is on the Dell list.

Sorry, remember I'm not that experienced. I tried to download windows from the link that said 'this is the best for your computer.' I just re-read and saw 'iso.' I didn't even know what that meant till now. Did you mean for me to download the windows installation onto the same USB as the drivers?

Sorry but being that the instructions for the ISO are at the Microsoft link that was provided where it says that the USB must be blank I didn`t see the need to say that you need a second USB device for the drivers, did you figure that bit out.
