BSOD - BCCode: 116 - Win 7 Desktop shuts down randomly & reboots

Good day all,

It's been a while. Glad to see the forum is running, and I hope doing well.

I've followed the posting instructions and have attached the minidump files.

Here are my PC specs. ** Note that I have a 6 monitor setup **

The problem started around Nov. 4, 2020 and has occurred 7 times to date. I ran Zemana Antimalware, JRT, Adware Removal Tool, Ultra Virus Killer, Kaspersky, Rogue Killer. Also, in SAFE MODE ran sfc scannow, chkdsk, tweaking.com. PC was also cleaned thoroughly blowing out all dust from the Corsair case enclosure.

My Windows 7 OS is up to date, but the NVIDIA drivers are not since they have caused problems in the past especially with their telemetry, NVIDIA container / backend.log.bak file which was chewing up my C drive free space ( SSD. The same thing appears to be happening now.

The blue screen message was something like - "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed." Below is a pic I found on the internet.

One solution is to delete the display driver and then reinstall in Device Manager, but will I risk losing my settings for the 6 monitor setup ??

Typical behaviour of something overheating, this includes the PSU overheating internally,

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

NB: Do you have any new crash dmps, the previous ones flagged up your GPU drivers btw.

Thanks for your help. I installed a CPU/GPU widget and temps are high IMO.
CPU getting up to 74 Celsius at times, but typically around 50 C to 60 C.

I don't have any new BSOD crash dumps, although yesterday I got Overclocking Failed which hasn't happened in a few years.

Hello paulwb,

looks like two issues going on, one hardware and one software related.

In case you are not already aware, adding even just a second monitor to a PC can cause the temps to increase by up to 10 °C.

The thermal trigger for your CPU is 66.8 °C and it reading 43 °C in Speccy when the computer is not under load from any software running is being caused entirely by you having so many displays hooked up.

You made a wise choice when you opted for the PSU but how old is it, first released way back in 2011 so has the potential to be almost nine years old and therefore well out of warranty, the age of the PSU + the additional monitors could be causing the PSU to overheat internally.

We can see a few things going on in Speccy but before elaborating too much I have a second question, how long ago did you have McAfee running on the computer.

The PC was built in Feb 2014 so it's been in use for 6.5+ years... without any monitor related temperature problems. The warranty on the PSU is 7 years so I'm still covered according to the warranty card.

McAfee I believe was preinstalled somehow, 6 years ago, and I didn't leave it on for long. Maybe a month, then uninstalled.

Why do you ask?

Cyberpower > 1000 PFCLCD - for 6, 24” monitors only

Cyberpower > 1500 AVR - for PC tower, mouse, keyboard, speakers

Sorry missed your double post earlier, GPU drivers were again the cause of the crash.

Does your warranty card say seven years, there were two versions of the PSU and one of them only had a five year warranty, regardless, 6.5 years of running your set up would take it out of any PSU, only putting forward possibilities here and you are free to take onboard or dismiss as you see fit.

Regarding McAfee, you have it on your computer and it can be seen to be running in Speccy.

Correct, the warranty card shows 7 years.

I think replacing it is a good idea.

You mentioned "We can see a few things going on in Speccy" - what are they?

How can I kill anything McAfee altogether?

What about updating my NVIDIA drivers? Anything I don't need to install via Custom Install ? Should I install the latest driver or find out which is the most recent stable version? Do you recommend disabling from services.msc,
  1. NVIDIA Wireless Controller Service ?
  2. Telemetry* Container ?

Looks like you cleared McAfee which is a good start, we will be able to confirm for you that it has gone.

Speccy asides for now as while we can see a few issues going on I doubt that they are responsible for the computer shutting down and/or restarting.

I suspect all we will see is kernel 41 errors and the computer was not shut down properly etc but lets see what MTB flags up, if the aforementioned are reported it does go some way to supporting the weak/overheating PSU suspicions.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.

I've had two crashes this morning already which is unusual, as I'm not using all the monitors and keeping open browser tabs to a minimum.

I can't do a drive back up as it takes a while and will probably crash, so hopefully this issue can be nailed down soon.

By the way, I was born in Jersey C.I...... but have lived in Canada all my life.

Your MTB log points towards Windows being corrupt and possibly caused by running crap like this

Also of note is that you have at one time had Malwarebytes installed and that it was not correctly uninstalled which is bad, the orphaned files could be conflicting with Panda and tripping the system up.

I would recommend the following;

Back up any personal data from the C: partition.

Download a Windows 10 ISO. (Still free to install, have your W7 key available as it may ask you for it as part of the install process.)

Download and save to a small thumbdrive the Windows 10 drivers from here.

Clean install Windows 10 then starting with chipset drivers install the drivers for the MB.

Get Windows and Windows Defender fully up to date and your done.

I plan to upgrade to Windows 10 but assumed that would take some time to get things back to where I want them. I don't want to lose the settings on my monitor array and trading applications, specifically MT4, which took some time to set up.

A google search says that "Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 is not quite as seamless as the move from Windows 8.1, but it's close. You get to keep your applications and settings, and the process is simple and leaves you almost no chance to accidentally delete all your apps and data. Jul 29, 2015"

Is this really the case ? At a minimum I'd want to do an image of my C drive before doing the upgrade.

I've got too much going on to rebuild an OS and would like a temporary, quicker solution until things normalise somewhat. My mother is 86, had hip replacement surgery recently and is going through a divorce. Plus I'm updating my basement apartment so she can move in.

As you've stated, the mini dump continually points to the video drivers. I'd like to try that first. What can you suggest about installing NVIDIA drivers and avoiding their telemetry crap .... NVIDIA container / backend.log.bak file ?

I've used ComboFix with success in the past. Would you recommend running it ? ( Last time I checked, it's not updated anymore )

Not sure that you are understanding what has been said, Windows is corrupt as in hosed, you mentioned in your OP that Windows 7 was up to date when in fact it is not as Windows updates have failed to install since July 4th 2020 and likewise Windows Defender has not been updated since August 21st 2020;

The corruption is there for all to see in the MTB log along with the broken Windows installer problems and being that you have already run the Windows AIO repair tool that includes running SFC but had no success I am not sure what else can be done.

Hardware wise suggest that you address the following, if Windows will allow it that is;

Power Profile
Active power scheme: High performance

I suggest that you change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, High Performance is a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues and the setting should only be used for gaming type notebooks that have a discrete GPU that needs the extra power.
