What about a reboot of the router and first time set up.

It might also be worth mentioning that my phone and tablet connect to the router without issue.
I wish that you had mentioned this sooner :(

Is there anything that could be interfering with the NICs signal, cordless telephone, microwave oven etc, how far away is the computer from the wireless router.

it would appear that this is a common HP problem with not much help from them when looking at threads around various forums.

The acid test for the computers NIC device would be to try connecting to a wireless network somewhere else, a pain in the proverbial to do with a desktop and that is why it has been left until last to do it, that and trying a clean install of Windows is about as much as I have left I`m afraid.

What is a first time set up? A reset to factory settings? I would rather not try this, the company doesn't share easily setting and passwords as they don't want us messing with their devices.

The desktop is little more than a meter away with a clear line of sight. There is nothing with radio signals near it, even the power strips are about a meter away.

I did try connecting it in a different location already... I've rearranged the room after the problem started and the desktop is now on a different location (other side of a 5 or 6 meter long room - all this before posting here). Behaviour is the same before and after.

I also tried connecting it to my phone's 4g hotspot... it just doesn't see any networks...

Do you reckon changing the adaptor would solve this issue? Or would I just run against the same upstream issue?

Understand your reluctance to change anything but fwiw see info here

Btw, what company devices would you be messing with?

I did try connecting it in a different location already..
I meant somewhere like a family member or friends home where there is a wireless router you could try connecting to.

Do you happen to know anyone that has a wireless USB adaptor that you could borrow, with those you just pop them into a USB 2.0 port at the back of the computer and then forget about them.

Oh I meant the router. It is provided by internet/cable company and they assume it's their stuff, you are just using it, it's not exactly your property. AFAIK it's very difficult (a lot say impossible) to ditch their router for a new one because they don't tell you Vlans etc. There're long discussions about this in national forums and I don't know enough to tell you if they are right, I just know that I don't know enough to mess with it :)

Different house or a USB adapter... that is going to be challenging, especially the latter. I won't be able to try that any time soon with this coronavirus business going on. I'm a health professional and I have to work some late shifts, people I know are also health professionals doing their own shifts at different times...

That is typical behaviour of what we have here in the UK, we have to use routers provided by the ISP but are free to change passwords, you are right to stick with what you are comfortable with and not change passwords etc.

I would stick with the Ethernet for now then tbh.

Ok, I'll do that! It may be best to lock the tread then? I don't think I'll be able to take the PC to someone else's home anytime soon...

Thank you for everything, I'll be sure to drop down a denotation for all the work!

No worries, you can send one of us a PM if you wish to reopen the thread in the future.

The thanks are ours to yourself and all other health professionals around the world, good luck and stay safe.

Thank you! So I was looking at wifi adaptors and it just occurred to me that mine has no antennas attached to it. I remember getting it to one of those repair caffes for some other thing and the guy going "why is there an earth wire here?" and ripping a wire out. I also remember the round end bits on it and at the time I didn't know what that was.

This would explain why there is no errors with the adaptor but no signal. The thing is, how would I replace this part? Are they sold separatly and what would they be called?

Also, some Amazon seller states they need to be soldered in and that's something I would have to look up on youtube on how to do.

The wireless/BT device in your computer does not have any antennas according to the specs here

The device is the M2 type that slots into the MB, see MB specs here note the M2 wireless lan (key A) slot, bottom left above the PCI-E slot.

If your computer is still printing using a wireless connection it proves that the wireless device is working, you could remove this device and fit your own PCI-E X1 type.

I take it that you are still able to use the wireless printer then.

I just have 2 PCI slots and one is disabled: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05868998 (you'll have to expand the motherboard tab to see it). I have no clue what that means, I've asked HP support but it wasn't helpful.
I may be able to shed some light on this with the following, the first thing will be down to cost and the second by the computer having an M2 device, the model of MB in your computer will have been used in various types of HP computer, this includes from entry level office type desktops and possibly even up to HPs attempts at gaming desktops, no PCI-E x1 slots on the board but it has a pump header that a serious gamer or overclocker would use, complete nuts if you ask me, second point is that an M2 type device can either share resources with the CPU or the GPU, your M2 device is using the resources from the second PCI-E slot, this is not always a problem and many boards allow the use of both types of device at the same time and what normally dictates this is the BIOS.

You may or may not want to try this but I would be curious to see if the second PCI-E slot would work if you tried removing the M2 device from the board and swapped the GPU from the first PCI-E slot and fitted it into the second.

Yes, I just had to reconnect both my printers because I got a different router and they are working just fine...

I'll try changing the graphic card and I'll let you know!
