Solved Basic network setup info help

Hi I am in the process of building a house and would like to better understand how to setup a basic network for internet to wired points in my house.

Please excuse my basic knowledge of the setup I spoke to some one yesterday about it at a local shop then did some research.

I will have fibre to the point in a nbn box in my garage. From there I would like to acheive wired internet to 4 rooms in my house also with wifi coverage for convinience of mobile devices ... Kids etc.

It was suggested I put a switch right off the nbn Uni-d point then run off the switch to wired locations... & Plug my modem into one of those points for wifi.

Is that correct & secure.

Yes that is secure.

Plus the cost of the wall connectors and cable per foot (I think) for Cat 7. What happens if the cable needs to be replaced, relocated, updated...

Here is another option to think on.

The other thing that you can think about doing is use the power outlets.

Plus this way of you want to move the computer to a different section of a room you do not need to run a long cable just move the plug in device.

bingo!

there will be a NBN point terminated in your garage, whatever that cable may be.
to that point you attach an internet modem, one you supply yourself or theirs.
either of those would have a few LAN ports, if not or if not enough for your needs, you attach a network switch with the number of ports you want. I suggest at least an 8port switch.

then you run ethernet cables from whatever room you want to attach a device to: PC's, laptops, smartTV's or wireless access points.
each of these cable runs go back to the garage next to the NBN point and terminate at the wall with a RJ45 plug and plate. looks like your phone wall sockets expect there will be one for each ethernet cable.
so it can start to look a bit ugly, so maybe get a cupboard built around it all: the data wall points, the nbn gear and your network switch.

and don't forget to have a ethernet cable terminate somewhere central in the house for that wireless router.

Thanks for the replies

Ok so in my nbn box will be a supplied nbn device ... G-240G-p. It has 4 uni-d outlets.

So I run off one of those outlets to a 8 port switch.

Off each usable outlet port of the switch I can run an ethernet cable to a location of my choice to have a wall outlet and a wired internet connection.

Then plug my modem into central location Ethernet outlet for wifi.

About the security aspect... I read that attaching the switch directy to he nbn device prior to my povidors modem will allow easy access to my network from outside users.

the sequence would be, a cable from the street to the NBN box, from that, an ethernet cable to the 8port switch, from that whatever number of ethernet cables to the wall sockets which in turn run to various locations throughout the house.

at those locations are the other ends of those cable runs where you plug in whatever you want: a PC, a smart TV, a wireless access point.

there will be a hardware level firewall in the NBN modem and if you wanted, you could install a 3rd party software firewall in each PC but there is no need as Windows 10 inbuilt protection is just fine.

when you get the NBN modem and wireless router, change the default admin passwords that allow access into the menu structure.
