Backup to upgrade to Brtps for NAS

Dear all,

I need some help in how to upgrade my 1513+ storage space to Brtps so I can start to use Synology Drive. My NAS is operating under DSM 6.2. Currently, I got 3 HDD running on raid 5. The storage Pool said I am using 3.5TB/5.4TB. I got 1 dummy HDD as volume 2 which I normally use it for download data which is currently empty. It said 3.4GB/2.7TB.

I would like to check if I can use Hyper Backup to back up the data from the raid 5 to my dummy HDD. I hope the backup do not need to use so much space and able to save all data into dummy HDD. If require, I got an empty slot , I can try to get a new HDD with bigger volume to backup the data.

For now, I would like to see how many space I need to completely backup my data in raid 5 through Hyper backup. If ok just using the dummy HDD is the best.

Another question is after I fully backup my data and upgrade the storage to Brtps, how to restore all my data into the new raid 5?

I used to use Hyper Backup but have moved on to Active Backup for O365.
it was a good product, but I can't remember why I ditched it.

but anyways, it should do what you want although from memory it was a little fiddly to setup.
also, a simply copy/paste from File Explorer will also suffice.

the 3.5TB used data from the 3 disk volume should fit on the 2.7TB sole volume disk as the parity requirements of RAID5 (they say) take up about a drives worth of space across that volume.

sadly, it will be a suck it and see exercise. :)

what's the reason to upgrade to RTPS?

DSM is up to version 7 now, you may want to upgrade that as well.

is the upgrade to RTPS a destructive process?
I would save all my data, do the conversion, and just copy my data back.

Hi Bruce,

The rason to upgrade to RTPS is because if you want to use Synology drive, your storage need to be in this format. If not, you just cant use the Synology drive at all..... this is the reason I try to back up or save all my data before I do anything.... like what upgrade window previously....

Upgrade to brtps required format the whole hdd... so yes, it is a complete destructive process.... may be my NAS is a bit outdated

I just replaced my dead Netgear NAS about 2 moths ago with a Synology DS218 unit.
I set the file system to ext4 and either used the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) or RAID1, as both give you fault tolerance of one failed drive.
didn't see anything about RTPS - you don't mean Btrfs do you???
