Assistance setting up fax and scanner program for printer model Samsung SCX-4623FW

Not open for further replies.
Hi once again. This week the PCHelpForum assisted me in networking my Samsung multi-function printer, model # SCX-4623FW. (the original thread can be found here: https://pchelpforum.net/t/trying-to-hook-up-an-old-printer-to-laptop-wirelessly.78091/#post-153481). This is the first time I have set up a network printer and it's really nice tobe able print to the machine wirelessly from anywhere on the premises. The laptop and desktop now access the printer wirelessly. From reading some information about the printer online, the machine has the ability to scan and fax wirelessly. It is important to note that the operating system that I am using is Windows 10.

Because it is a multi-function printer, I am now seeking assistance setting up the following:
1. Setting up fax software that will permit me to receive and send faxes;
2. Scanning software that will permit me to scan documents.

1(a) With respect to item # 1, I remember that at my old office we would receive and send faxes via a program like VentaFax. Because of the sheer volume of faxes we recieved, this program was very helpful in that it would save a electronic copy of the faxes transmitted. We could access the electronic copy of the fax by simply toggling through a list of faxes which were date and time stamped.

1(b) Also, when I am sending a fax it is important that I receive a confirmation of the fax transmission;

1(c) As I am setting this up with an existing landline, the fax program would need to detect whether it is simply an incoming call or a fax, and activate when required. SInce I have not used the printer in years, I will probably need assistance hooking the respective wire to the outlet. I vaguely remember that I had to hook up a device to the landline so that it would recognize the signal and then at one point it was no longer required. Once this is set up, I will need a way to test that the fax being sent is working.

2(a) With respect to the scanning software, when I initially purchased this printer an installation disc was provided to set up the relevant scanning software. I no longer have the disc anymore and since the operating system was for Windows Vista, I believe the software is now defunct.

2(b) I believe that there exists an updated version of the scanning software for this machine. I will need assistance obtaining and installing this software

2. Scanning software that will permit me to scan documents.
Go here Click On Me and download the scanner driver and install
use windows inbuilt fax and scan program for scanning
To fax from the computer the only way I know is you need a modem connected to the computer
Or a fax server.
Just as easy to print out the fax and send from the printer
1(b) Also, when I am sending a fax it is important that I receive a confirmation of the fax transmission
is a setting in the printer

Receiving faxes using DRPD mode Distinctive Ring is a telephone company service which enables an user to use a single telephone line to answer several different telephone numbers. The particular number someone uses to call you is identified by different ringing patterns, which consist of various combinations of long and short ringing sounds. This feature is often used by answering services who answer telephones for many different clients and need to know which number someone is calling in on to properly answer the phone. Using the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD) feature, your fax machine can learn the ring pattern you designate to be answered. Unless you change it, this ringing pattern will continue to be recognized and answered as a fax call, and all other ringing patterns will be forwarded to the extension telephone or answering machine plugged into the EXT socket. You can easily suspend or change DRPD at any time.
Before using the DRPD option, Distinctive Ring service must be installed on your telephone line by the telephone company. To set up DRPD, you will need another telephone line at your location, or someone available to dial your fax number from outside.
To set up the DRPD mode:
1. Press (Fax) on the control panel.
2. Press Menu on the control panel.
3. Press the left/right arrow until Fax Setup appears and press OK.
4. Press the left/right arrow until Receiving appears and press OK.
5. Press the left/right arrow until Receive Mode appears and press OK.
6. Press the left/right arrow until DRPD appears and press OK. Waiting Ring appears on the display.
7. Call your fax number from another telephone. It is not necessary to place the call from a fax machine.
8. When your machine begins to ring, do not answer the call. The machine requires several rings to learn the pattern. When the machine completes learning, the display shows Completed DRPD Setup. If the DRPD setup fails, Error DRPD Ring appears. Press OK when DRPD appears and start over from step 6.
• DRPD must be set up again if you re-assign your fax number, or connect the machine to another telephone line. • After DRPD has been set up, call your fax number again to verify that the machine answers with a fax tone. Then have a call placed to a different number assigned to that same line to be sure the call is forwarded to the extension telephone or answering machine plugged into the EXT socket.

Hi PeterOz,
I first would like to thank you for assisting me in setting up the printer. The printer has been sitting idle for 4 years and it's life to see the "little guy" functioning as intended.

Second, thanks for the detailed instructions. I downloaded "the scanner driver" and installed it but during the installation prompts, it required me to detect the printer. The wizard could not detect the printer "wirelessly" via the wireless network. Will I have to connect the laptop directly to the printer to setup the scanning software?

And in future, when scanning documents will the printer have to be wired temporarily?

Hi PeterOz,
I just realized that the printer can be connected via the usb. I opted to install the driver via the network path option and it appears to have worked. I used to "Windows Fax and Scan" software to scan a test page. It appears to work only when I connect the printer to the laptop.

I also installed the fax utility but I encountered an issue when I restarted the laptop to complete the install process. My mouse stopped functioning: I could not click (left click or right click) any toggle button, minimise or close a browser/application. I restarted the laptop twice and somehow the mouse began working again.

1. Any idea if this issue will persist?

2.(a) Will I have to use the "Windows Fax and Scan" software? Or after installing the Network PC Fax is a software package, is there an application that I will have to use to send the fax?

2.(b) Also, how can I easily test if a fax will transmit?

do you have this
USING SAMSUNG SCAN MANAGER If you have installed the printer driver, the Samsung Scan Manager program is installed too.
Start Samsung Scan Manager program to find out about this program information and the installed scan driver's condition.
Through this program, you can change scan settings and add or delete the folders where scanned documents are saved in your computer.
1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel > Samsung Scan Manager.
You can open Samsung Scan Manager by right clicking the Smart Panel icon in the Windows task bar and selecting Scan Manager.
2. Select the appropriate machine from the Samsung Scan Manager window.
3. Press Properties.
4. The Set Scan Button tab allows you to change the saving destination and scan settings, add or delete application program, and format files. You can change the scanning machine by using the Change Port tab (Local or Network).
5. When setting is done, press OK

Hi PeterOz,
Apologies in advance. I understand the concept of "push scan" and "pull scan" but I am not sure how to check/action the request.

What I do know is that when the computer is directly wired to the printer, the "Windows Fax and Scan" software does work. If the option is there to wirelessly scan/fax, that would be the preference.

If I disconnect the laptop and try to scan using "Windows Fax and Scan" software, the message I got is the following:
"No scanners were detected. If a scanner was installed, make sure it is powered on and connected to the computer, and then try again. For information about adding or troubleshooting scanners, see Help and Support."

1. Make sure that your machine and the computer are connected to a network and Samsung Scan Manager is installed on the computer.
2. Load originals face up into the document feeder, or place a single original face down on the scanner glass.
3. Press (Scan) on the control panel.
4. Press the left/right arrow until Scan To PC appears and press OK.
5. Press the left/right arrow until Network PC appears and press OK

Hi PeterOz,
I checked my computer and it did not appear that I had an application for Samsung Scan Manager installed. Under the created folder "Samsung Printers" no such application by that name. Further info provided below.
If the above does not work go here
Download and install.
Does this give scan software when installed
I ensured that the laptop was hooked up to the printer.

I then elected download the driver from the link in your second post. Upon downloading the driver, it appears that instead of installation called "Samsung Scan Manager", it instead installed an application called "Samsung Printer Center".

Upon opening up the application "Samsung Printer Center", there were two tabbed areas within the application:
a. The first tab was titled printers and displayed all printers installed on the computer. Active ones appear while non-active ones are greyed out.
b. The second tab was titled "Scanner and fax".

I attempted to scan, a document but it did not work. Instead the application displayed an error message as follows: "Error connecting the scanner device. Please re-select in the device combo boc to initialize the connection again. If it doesn't help, please turn the device off, then switch it on and wait while it warms up."

From examining the printers tab, I could see that there were two "Samsung SCX-4623FW printers installed, one being a copy and the other displaying my IP address beside it. I switched the printers and tried to scan but I again received the above error message.

At the bottom of right hand corner of the application, there was an option to "update software".

I proceeded to update the following displayed options:
1. SCAN DRIVER;
2. FAX DRIVER;
3. EASY PRINTER MANAGER;
4. EASY DOCUMENT CREATOR;
5. ECO DRIVER PACK;
6. STYLISH DRIVER PACK;
7. PRINTER DRIVER;
8. OCR PLUG IN.

Once I updated the above drivers/programs, I attempted to scan a document which worked.

While playing with the options I discovered that I could scan documents from the flatbed or automatic document feeder (ADF)! Fantastic! :)(y)

Now while typing this message, I discovered something fantastic that I did not expect!

The laptop was unplugged from the printer and while looking up information displayed on the application, I discovered that I am able to scan documents wirelessly from either the flatbed or automatic document feeder (ADF)! :p(y)(y)

This was not something I was able to do before using the printer's old Samsung scanner application which was very buggy! Anytime I had to scan a document, the machine had to be wired.

The interesting thing about the updated application is the fact that when you scan a document, you are doing so from the "scanner and fax" tab on the "Samsung Printer Center" application. Doing so, opens a sub-application called "Easy Document Creator". Using the Easy Document Creator, you are able to choose whether you will scan from the flatbed or ADF, set the resolution, size, automatic background removal, automatic exposure, automatic color balance, automatic rotation, automatic straighten, blank page removal, page separation, and center area correction. I make mention of this as some of these features did not exist with the old application that came with the printer.

It also has two easy to use options:
1. A text converting scan;
2. A document "converting option". Here you can convert a document to .PDF. Another interesting feature as the old application required you to have Adobe installed in order to install it.

I can say that the scanner works!

The last item left is to solve how to fax using the "Samsung Printer Center" application. As mentioned above, the option is there. I just have not been able to get the fax portion of the program to work. :unsure:

Hi PeterOz,
Apologies in advance for the late reply. I believe I have the software installed. I will need a few days to figure out if the fax is working. I will have to wait until Monday to verify if the recipient received the fax. I will update this thread with respect to the result. Cheers!
