I have a dell optioned that I got used and was trying to turn it into a solid pc. And it came with a core i3 and I wanted something more powerful so I ordered a core i5 750 which apparently did not fit In The cpu socket. So I cleaned off the old thermal paste and applied it to the old cpu and after putting it in. I plugged it in and tested it to see if it would work and it would turn on but wouldn’t display and when I had went to turn the pc off the power button never turned the pc off

Welcome to PCHF Moonlitexcel2367,

It is possible that something is shorting out and possibly the CPU socket.

Can you post the exact model name or number of the Dell so we can do some research, it would also help if you could tell us what i3 CPU you have.

Ok

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like the CPU socket and/or the original i3 2120 have been damaged, not sure if you are aware but the two CPUs are different socket types, the i3 2120 being FCLGA1155 whereas the replacement i5-750 is LGA1156 🙁

Depends on what the damage is.

Can I ask why you have been posting under two user names which is against forum rules as you are only allowed to have the one account.

I didn’t know how to setup the account cause the confirm email I got signed me in but I thought I had to sign. Up again

Not sure how or why that happened but there is a first time for everything, a colleague has dealt with the second account so only Moonlitexcel2367 is active now.

If the MB and/or the CPU have shorted out you are looking at a right off I`m afraid.

Get yourself a magnifying glass and closely inspect both CPUs and the CPU socket for signs of damage, bent or missing pins on the CPUs and snapped off pins in the socket or damage to the socket itself such as scrapes, dents etc.

Ouch, makes something having been shorted out even more of a possibility 🙁

Not so easy to straighten bent pins these days but fwiw I used to use a mechanical pencil for straightening out CPU pins, you empty out the lead, press the top of the pencil, slide it over the top of a pin, release the pressure from the top of the pencil and then move the pencil upwards straightening the pin in the process, care must be taken as any rough treatment could snap a pin.

We have no way of knowing what damage has been done, compare your CPU to the one in the attachment to check for damage on your CPU and likewise compare the socket on your MB to the appropriate one at the link that was previously provided.
