A new HDD for a laptop

I have an old laptop, HP Probook 4520s. Its HDD is failing. Each time on boot it displays a SMART warning message. Speccy shows which particular SMART parameters are out of bounds.

I want to replace the HDD, perhaps by cloning it to a new one. My current HDD is 9.5mm thick. Can I use a slimmer HDD or I need an HDD of exactly same thickness?

Also is it prudent to replace an HDD in an old laptop? Once upon a time I had a problem on a desktop PC with an HDD failing due to faulty PSU. I was able to salvage the HDD by re-initializing it. But here I do not think I'll be able to repair the HDD or laptop's internal "PSU".

I would use the same size,so the HDD doesn't move around,if you move the laptop.

Replacing the HDD on an old laptop could be prudent if the laptop still works good.. On the internal psu,the spec's i saw shows a normal battery an external AC adapter,which all should be replaceable.

If the HDD is failing then cloning it may not be a great idea.

The data may not copy correctly causing corruption. If you have not at this time WILL suggest that you start backing up you personal files and data.

What operating system and version?

Any specs would help.
