Troubleshooting Cd Rom driver - Help???

Status
Not open for further replies.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, very old machine. All is good with the exception of Cd Rom drive. It will accept and turn a disc for a moment, but Pc never loads info. I opened - Control Panel> All Control Panel Items> Troubleshooting. Clicked Troubleshooting Hardware & Devices. It detected a problem with the CDDVDRW device stating : A driver for this device has been disabled, an alternate driver maybe providing this function ( Code 32 ). So I view the Device properties and see Device Details, Update Device, Roll Back Device, Disable Device and Uninstall Devise. The Roll Back Devise will not 'Highlight' when scrolled over. Help finding solution would be fantastical. Can't make cd or download programs.....

Could it actually be a faulty CD unit?
They only cost about $AUD15 for a new one.
Have you tried different discs to double check it's not just the one disc at fault?

In Device Manager, uninstall the CD unit and reboot the PC.

Also try the SFC /scannow command first from an elevated command prompt to check for system file corruption.

And last straw, if that doesn't work try, (admittedly I've had success with this when the CD unit vanished from the system but you may get lucky)
  • go into regedit
  • go to this key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the entries for UpperLimits and LowerLimits
  • exit
  • reboot

Yes Bruce, tried a movie DVD and a Canon Camera software Disc. Each time, the light by Cd port flashes a few moments and stops. I have tried finding the Drive on the boot-up page, but unsure which it is. I will try your suggestion of uninstall and reboot. I will update results later. Thanks for your info.

just had another idea.... could it be as simple of the laser head needs a bit of TLC.
get a soft britsle brush (or one of those disc cleaning discs) and wipe the laser in the CD tray.
That maybe possible. Bruce, but it maybe irrelevant now coz I followed your advice and uninstalled the CD/Rom device. Upon rebooting, system didn't recognize it. I'm stupid when it comes to PC, but I find it hard to believe that a dirty lazer would prompt the system to State "the driver for this devise has been disabled". It leads me to think there is a way to turn it off and on. But like I said, I not know alot about em. Appears it will be in the shop before too long. Thanks for your input.

Ok here is a link from a Certified Microsoft Partner.. For a driver for the cd/dvd drive.. http://semantic.gs/tsstcorp_cddvdw_sh_s223c_scsi_cdrom_device_driver_download

Scroll down to download options... Click on 2. Driver Installation Manager
Let the manager scan your pc for the correct driver..Just follow the prompts.

It would be prudent to create a restore point,before installing this driver..

Upon rebooting, system didn't recognize it.
In this case, you scan for hardware changes.
1. Open Device Manager
2. Click the Action item on the top menu
3. Click Scan for hardware changes

Give it time to work. Your optical drive should be found and a driver for it installed.

Speccy does show that the device has a problem, see below; would check further first though;

Optical Drives
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C SCSI CdRom Device
Media Type: UNKNOWN
Name: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C SCSI CdRom Device
Availability: Running/Full Power

Config Manager User Config: FALSE
Media Loaded: FALSE

Transfer Rate: 48000 KB/S

Can you take a couple of expanded screenshots of Disk Manager and upload them for us;

1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.

2. Click on the System and Security link.

Note: If you're viewing the Large icons or Small iconsview of Control Panel, you won't see this link so just click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.

3. In the System and Security window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.

4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.

5. When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left side of the window, located under Storage.

After a brief loading period, Disk Management should now appear on the right side of the Computer Management window.

Note: If you don't see Disk Management listed, you may need to click on the |> icon to the left of the Storage icon.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on ATTACH FILES...desktop...find the screenshot..select it then click on post reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.
