When I turned my computer on today there was a message on a black and white screen to say that parts of 'disc C' could be suspect and that it was highly recommended that I click the request to check it.
This I did and then sat through a frightening time whilst it said in black and white again that Index entries were being deleted. This was in the hundreds.
In all my years of computer ownership I have never seen this before.
Is this a valid transaction? It was like a virus deleting files.

My computer takes charge and decides to delete hundreds of index entries over nearly half and hour and everyone thinks that this is so normal that it doesn't deserve an answer?
I'm so relieved.
I might join in the thread about which GPU to buy, that got seventy answers.

Hey there Heat Sink,

We're all volunteers and have jobs, so please don't think you're being ignored because you're not :) We always get to every thread, so please don't worry.

What OS are you running? Was the computer working well before this happened or did red flags happen before this?

I assume this was CHKDSK running yes? If so, seeing those entries means the hard drive is starting to die, as it's telling you files were lost and so it's deleting those entries as they no longer exist.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt and running chkdsk /r?

Morning jmarket,

Sorry about the prompt but I am kinda worried and saw this as a real issue
No this happened immediately at start up.
And the computer is still working fine as if nothing happened.
But I will download all my photos and stuff onto a thumb drive right away in case it crashes.
Looks like I had then better source a new hard drive. Maybe this time I can afford a solid state one with prices coming down.
Thanks jmart.

Try doing the following for me:

  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt[/*]
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator[/*]
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press Enter.

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue[/*]
  • Copy and paste the following command, press Enter.

    Code:
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfc.txt
That will create sfc.txt on your Desktop. Please attach sfc.txt to your next post:
  • Open Reply window. Click 'More Reply Options'.
  • Go to the end of your text (if any).
  • Under 'Attach Files' click 'Choose Files..'
  • For 'File name' paste this: %userprofile%\Desktop\sfc.txt
  • Click the 'Add to Post' link which will appear on the right when the file has been uploaded.
  • Click 'Add Reply'.

Am having trouble getting the files from the black box readout onto the forum page jmart. But this is what it said after the long download.
Windows resources protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
Details included in the CBS log.

As the computer is working fine now, it looks like that is all it was. Corrupt files.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.
